Mates of State – Mountaintops

Mates of State releases their seventh album, Mountaintops, today. Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel met right here in Lawrence, Kansas before relocating to California and eventually settling in Connecticut. They now have two children but continue to make music and tour. Kori even has a blog, Diaper On The Run, in which she tells of her parenting experiences and tales of the life of a traveling family band.

The new album is Mates of State at its finest. From the “Whoo Oohooh Oooh” of the opening track, “Palomino”, and the synthesized beats of “Maracas” to the more somber tone of album’s finale, “Mistakes”, the duo give us a satisfying new album full of catchy tunes. My simple review of Mountaintops is that it is good.

They’ll be performing at the Record Bar in Kansas City, along with Generationals, on November  15th. Below is the video for “Maracas.”
